Chlamydia & Gonorrhea
Bacterial ยท Curable with antibiotics
Early stage: Often no symptoms at all. When present: unusual discharge, burning when urinating, pelvic discomfort.
If untreated: Can spread to the reproductive organs, potentially causing pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pain, or fertility problems over time.
Good news: Both are simply cured with the right antibiotics when caught early.
Bacterial ยท Curable, especially early
Stage 1 (Primary): A single, usually painless sore โ easy to miss, and heals on its own even without treatment.
Stage 2 (Secondary): Rash, mild fever or fatigue weeks later, also self-resolving.
Later stages: The infection can remain dormant for years before potentially affecting the heart, brain or nervous system if never treated.
Good news: Testing and antibiotics at any early stage prevent this progression entirely.
Viral ยท Manageable with treatment
Early stage: May cause flu-like symptoms 2โ4 weeks after exposure, or no symptoms at all.
Without treatment: The virus gradually weakens the immune system over years.
With modern treatment: People diagnosed early and on consistent treatment can expect a normal life expectancy and cannot transmit the virus to partners once undetectable. Early testing is what makes this possible.
Viral ยท Manageable, not curable
Early stage: Blisters or sores that can be painful, or very mild symptoms many people never notice.
Ongoing: The virus stays in the body and may cause occasional flare-ups, often less severe over time.
Management: Antiviral medication reduces flare-up frequency and transmission risk โ most people manage it well long-term.
Viral ยท Often clears on its own
Early stage: Often no visible signs; some strains cause small warts.
Most cases: The immune system clears the virus naturally within 1โ2 years.
Why screening matters: Certain high-risk strains, if persistent and undetected long-term, are linked to cervical and other cancers โ which is why routine screening (like Pap smears) matters even without symptoms.
