Is the Pull-Out Method Safe for STIs?
Short answer: no. Here's why, and what it means for testing.
The facts
What withdrawal does & doesn't do
It does not protect against STIs
Many STIs spread through skin-to-skin contact, pre-ejaculate fluid, or contact with mucous membranes โ not just ejaculation. Withdrawal timing has no effect on this.
Examples that spread regardless of withdrawal
- Herpes and HPV โ spread via skin contact
- Gonorrhea and chlamydia โ can transmit via pre-ejaculate and mucosal contact
- Syphilis โ spreads via contact with a sore, anywhere on the genital area
So what should you do?
Treat this the same as any unprotected sex situation.
Get tested on the standard timeline
